1st and 2nd

had five teams entered, including our two, and was a round robin format with the top two teams going forward to contest a final.
First up were our 1st team with a tough opener against a strong Chiswick Cavaliers side with home advantage. This potentially was going to set the tone for the day and so it was to be.
After two minutes Si Rowland was substituted. As he left the field he said, and I quote, “Thanks Dave!” with huge relief in his voice.
Angus Munns opened the scoring followed up by Mike Lovelock. The game was won 10 – 12 and
just the start we wanted.
Next up was our 2nd squad and no holding back with a convincing 21 – 0 win against Belsize Park 2’s.
Then it was time for the clash between Harlequin 1st and Harlequin 2nd.
The game was keenly contested with no holding back. Some great 7’s from both sides led to one of the best games of the day and finished with four tries each. Unfortunately the 1’s missed a conversion and so the 2’s won by two points. 26 – 24.
Si Rowland was now collapsed on the ground and had gone foetal trying to die in peace.
The rest of the day went to plan with both teams winning all their games.
That meant our 2nd squad finished top of the group and our 1st squad finishing one place behind.
So the final would be a repeat of the four try all thriller of earlier in the day. We did have a bit of a wait while the competition on pitch 1 caught up. Would it be worth waiting for? You bet.
Again the match was keenly contested with the 1’s looking for revenge.
Unfortunately it didn’t look like coming when the 2’s took the lead early on with a Tom (Twinkle Toes) McArthur try. However the 1’s were not to be put off. They came storming back and surged ahead with three tries of their own. Mike Lovelock, Angus Munns and Ben Sutherland doing the damage. By this time, Si Rowland was back on his feet. Unfortunately standing up was about all he could manage.
So, 3 – 1 up with the 2’s chasing the game and sure enough, back they came. Another try from Tom McArthur further added to by one from Harry Clifford and the try count was again even at the end of the game. However, the conversion nightmare had struck again and having missed one the 1’s found themselves just two points adrift yet again. The 2’s ran out winners 19 – 21. Another exciting great game of 7’s and credit to all the players.
Well done for finishing 1st and 2nd , putting a cup in the trophy cabinet.
A very enjoyable and successful day enjoyed by all.
Si Rowland, thanks for coming mate.
