Our Good Friend and Founder of the Amateurs

Our good friend Frank died peacefully in his sleep on 18th October after a long illness.

Frank joined Harlequins in the 1972/73 season. He ventured south to London after having played for Waterloo RFC, Liverpool. His move south came as a result of an employment relocation, Frank was at the time a Sales Promotion Executive for the Amoco Petroleum Company.

He played primarily for Quins A, ingratiating strength and power in the front row. Frank surprisingly caught the eye of the Quins committee who enrolled him in 1974 under the title of Executive Officers - "Entertainments Officer'' - "Quelle Surprise" !! Amongst the many facets within that role, Frank took it upon himself to redecorate and run the bar, with the assistance of many, one being Malcolm Joyner who was Frank's boss at Amaco.

Frank enjoyed many tours with the Harlequin Gents, and his exploits on tour are well recorded in the memory banks of those who were there. Among the numerous stories, relating particularly to water, Frank added far too many sachets of bubble bath to a fountain in the lobby of a fine hotel in Paris just to see what would happen. Within minutes bubbles filled the reception, heading for the revolving doors and out into the street. The Spinola Barge (Bar) in Amsterdam will recall Frank's removal of the plug in the bilge area of the barge, leading to water gushing in at an alarming rate, Why? !! Alas, Frank continued to entertain us throughout the years.

He was an integral part in the reformation of the Harlequin Amateurs in the year 2000/2001 season and he was integral to the merger of Lensbury/Lockside RFC with the Amateurs in 2008, after which he relocated to France for a well-deserved retirement. His legacy is that Harlequin Amateurs FC continues to grow from strength to strength.

Frank leaves behind his children Kezia and James who can take comfort in the knowledge that their father was a much treasured and loved figure within the Harlequin Amateurs FC, and a good friend to so many of us.

Message from Ken Sass from down under:"Frankie ol' son, you gave a lot of people some highly amusing and memorable grief, especially the girls. Rest in peace mate and give those angels a run for their money".

"Thanks for the memories Frank"

A message from Kezia
It’s with a heavy heart that James and I would like to confirm our father’s cremation service and celebration.

Frank’s service taking place at:
Southampton Crematorium at 1:45pm on Wednesday 3rd November (Basset Green Road, Southampton SO16 3QB) then heading to Trojan’s Rugby Club (Stoneham Lane, Eastleigh, SO50 9HT) to raise a glass or two to Frank.

We would kindly ask that people wear colourful clothing and Quins Number 1s or Rugby colours if you have them as this is a celebration of dad’s life and to quote dad ‘only mobsters wear black’.

We would ask for family flowers only & any kind donations will go to The Alzheimer’s Society to help families and research.
