Is it starting to come together?

Is it starting to come together?

David Love2 Mar - 18:49

Quins Ams 33 – 19 Old Glynonians

Two weeks ago after our match at Southwark, I wrote that the game against Old Glyn was “likely to be another tough one against another of the Top 3 but if we play like we finished the Southwark game, we are more than capable of holding our own.”

You know that movie trope where the sequel picks up exactly where the first film ends? Sometimes, it would be great if real life could be like that because by 4pm on Saturday afternoon this prediction was proven to be 100% correct.

And whilst it may be too late in the season to mount a charge for promotion, this result showed what we can do as we start to come together as a team.

It’s undeniable that 2025 has seen a huge redesign of the team in just a few short weeks. Whoever you are, it takes time to build a team. Time that a level 10 club simply doesn’t have. 90 minutes at training and a game on a Saturday afternoon aren’t long enough to forge the relationships that a team needs. For players to know the subtle tells that a teammate has so you can know what he’s about to do.

The Southwark game showed that the understanding is starting to come together but this match could very easily have been a regression with yet move new combinations needing time to bed in.

So, what was the difference? One word: commitment.

OGs have a very obvious game plan of bullying the opposition in scrums and mauls then sending big runners barrelling into the defensive line.
What’s great about such a clear way of playing is that it’s very easy to know what you need to do against it. In this case, front up in the pack and make the first up tackles in midfield.

The first 10 minutes of the game epitomised this commitment. The scrums were (at worst) even but the defence was herculean.

We spent much of this period in our 22 where time and again an OGs forward would make a strong carry only to meet a brick wall. Until finally, there was a turnover, a Quins break and we’re 7-0 up.

The live commentary from those on the sidelines paints much the same picture throughout the game. There are phrases like “soaking up loads of pressure” and “top D”. Prior to this game and OGs had averaged 34 points per game. We held them to just 19.

This was always likely to be a tough game but through sheer commitment to each other, Quins were able not just to grind out a win but to build a comfortable lead, score 5 tries and hold OGs to 0 league points – only the second time that’s happened to them this season.

And so we turn our focus to Reigate away next week. With just three games left, let’s keep this momentum going and finish the season strongly.

MoM was JP. He just did what he always does and was therefore at the heart of our solid defence – making massive hits and turning over ball.

DoD was George who upset the in-laws by getting Chris a yellow card
