The week led up to the more recent formation — chasing bodies to make sure we got 15 out — until Sean’s call out to the legends and Lovey’s call to the vets became prominent: “Come and play for the Quarters, we need you.”
12 available quickly turned into 24, and with injuries lingering, we decided to let the injured guys rest and bring in some of the “old” boys.
The likes of Si Morgan, Rupert Shaw, Paul Hibbert, Graeme Green, Bernardo Gollo, and BVW — who haven’t played in the shirt for many years — were able to show up, put the shirt on again, and represent the club.
The messages, as always — defend hard and play what you see — showed exactly how we played on the day: not allowing an inch in defence but enjoying the freedom to play while attacking. George, Josh, Archie, and Wally regularly turned the opposition inside out to allow multiple tries from the backline, while also being ruthless in defence, with strong line running from Chris, Bobby, and JP.
At scrum time, we were dominant, with Bobby playing at 1, shocking everyone by absolutely dominating his opposite number, while also providing strong carries. The rest of the tight five continuously put RP on the back foot, with Bernardo hitting rucks for fun and JP stealing the ball off the oppo as if he owned it — allowing the backs quick ball for Hugo and George to feed Archie for his first try.
The rest of the first half was much the same — Chris carrying hard and breaking away for a 100m try (it was about 50m, but he’ll claim 100m) — and Josh was solid with the boot, scoring 8/9 from the tee.
Kieran, making his debut in the Quarters, came on and continued to dominate in the scrum and carries, creating space for his mate Sean to carry and throw that ridiculous dummy he always does… When a man says to you “I can only play 3,” you let him play 3. While the niggle slowly crept into the game, Quins’ target remained the same: score more points and enjoy the day. Si Morgan showed exactly that, jinking his way through the oppo backline a few times to put the ball under the posts.
Chad came on after 40 — after he decided to go pumpkin picking on a Saturday (ridiculous) — and continued to put us on the front foot, followed by strong carries from Rupert, Wags, and JP.
If only Archie knew how to execute a 4 v 1 instead of carrying himself… maybe Brando or Ben would have also got onto the scoresheet.
We ended up winning the game 61–0 with tries from Archie (x3), Chris (x2), Simon (x2), Wally, and George. We also enjoyed the day out — with an average age of 35 ?
