Revenge for Harlequins with thumping win over Quintin

Harlequin Amateurs made the familiar trip to West London on Saturday in a rematch of last weekend’s cup fixture that saw Quins exit at the semi final stage.

With welcome returns to the starting line up for George Jaques, Luke Povey, Aaron Addis and Kay Frazer in the backs, Harlequins knew that, given the right platform, they could cause trouble for the hosts. This was immediately evident as Kay and Aaron both went close in the early stages. Only last ditch tackles preventing Quins from taking an early lead. With dominance at the set piece, cracks started to appear in the Quintin defence, and on 15 minutes Inside Centre Paul Hibbert broke through and dotted down under the posts to open the scores. George added the extras for a 0-7 lead. Shortly after, it was Fly Half Luke Povey’s turn to get over the line with a quick fire brace, the first of which after a great step inside his opposite number to run in from half way. George converting both to make it 0-21 after 28 minutes. After having gone close a couple of times previously, it was Kay Frazer next over the line after a strong run down the right hand side. George continued his fine kicking form to leave the half time score and 0-28 and the Bonus Point wrapped up.

The second half got under way and it wasn’t long before Quins extended their lead further. Aaron Addis this time running a great line to cross the line. 0-35 with the kick. The second half did see the penalty count begin to rise slightly for the visitors, and Quintin were able to take advantage with an unconverted score of their own. 5-35.

With Quintin being forced into making changes, and obviously missing a few key personel from the week before, Quins were able to keep the pressure on and in the 55th minute Fullback James Summersett ran in to score under the posts. Having only just been introduced to the game, Jimmy Lynch didn’t take long to make his mark after speeding off down the left wing leaving the opposition trailing to score on 58 minutes, and then again five minutes later to take his try tally for the afternoon to two and the overall score to 5-56.

Another player not satisfied in just making up the numbers was Graeme Tew, who came off the bench and, within minutes, was putting in trademark hits that the touchline could hear before being on hand to gather a Dave Love charge down to score. 5-61.

The final score for the away team came from Sean Gorman who scored an absolute gift after Tewy made a fine break in midfield before feeding Povey to run in to score. With January being the toughest of months on all of us, Povey thought he’d save a few quid on the hat trick jug and pop the ball for Sean to score. 5-68.

Credit must go to Quintin who battled to the final whistle despite the scoreline and were rewarded for their efforts with a second try that brought the final score to 10-68.

With every game having a Cup Final feel in this league, Harlequins will be pleased to get such a good result against a very good Quintin team who sit in fourth place in the table.

This week’s TES sponsored Man Of the Match goes to Chris Addis who was a constant thorn in the side of the home side with big runs and strong tackles that stopped any attack in its tracks.

The DoD goes to Sean Gorman for a wildly under appreciated kick that didn’t quite work, but would have been contender for try of the season had it come off. It didn’t come off. It was rubbish.
