Quins Back to Winning Ways

After a couple of tough results, Quins bounce back with a convincing win at home against Old Hamptonians. The impact of returning coach Brian Holland was immediately seen with Quins looking more like themselves during the warmup, focused and ready for the task at hand.

Quins knew they had to be physical up front to combat a speedy and slick Old Hamptonian back line, and this did not take long to show with big carries from the pack shortly after kick off, with the boys going through the phases and retaining possession. It did not take long until the 1st try was scored with a darting snipe for the line from scrumhalf Harry Brewer, however Quins could not add the extras with the conversions striking the uprights.

More disciplined attack gave quins the opportunity to strike again with a lineout well in the Old H’s 22m. A rare sloppy lineout fell into the hands of second rower Will O’Donnell who powered over for his first of the game. Quins soon found themselves again another attacking opportunity, this time with a scrum 10m out which allowed a clean platform for the backs to unleash Callum Savill who dived over the line.

The momentum started to swing in favour of Old Hamptonians, who were the beneficiaries of a Quins yellow card for a late tackle off a lineout from flanker Lance Davis. Quins responded quickly with ball carrying centre Dean Oliver who broke through the line to run in a try from the halfway, however this was the last we would see of Oliver this half as the solo effort caused whatever remained of breakfast to come straight back up. A lapse of concentration from Quins allowed Old Hamptonians to use their pace and get on the outside channel to score their first points of the half. Quins would end the half with a driving maul, which saw Tommy Darcy walked over the line.

The start of the second half was scrappy from Quins despite an O’Donnell score, with missed opportunities and poor handling, giving Old Hamptonians clean ball to play with resulting in another well executed backs move, and another try for the visitors. Quins were determined not let the oppo back in and responded with another powerful driving maul which gifted stalwart Dave Love his yearly try. Another missed kicked put the score at 35-19.

Quins started to tire which Old Hamptonians capitalised on, scoring their 3rd try of the game. A couple of substitutions from Quins breathed some life back into the boys and helped them to find their second wind, with the hammer Ryan Edwards bursting through a tackle to score for Quins. Oliver, back on the pitch, was not finished with his game and after yet another strong driving maul from the pack, found the ball worked down the line into his hands where he flopped over (he will tell you it was a dive.... it wasn't) for his second and the last score of the game.

Unfortunately, whilst making a tackle the Old Hamptonians captain went down with a severe injury to his ankle which resulted in an early finish for both sides. All of us at Harlequins Amateurs would like to wish the OH’s captain all the best and hope for a speedy recovery.

Man of the Match – Harry Brewer, The scrum half bossed the tempo of the game, took advantage of the gaps that appeared and scored in a complete performance.

DOD – James Summersett, In true Summersett fashion, the fly half had the biggest moan of the game when his kick to touch (which he will tell you went at least 40m) was marked out 5m in front of him. Despite protests to the ref and touch judge, the kick was still only 5m long.
