On this damp and foggy morning we welcomed Richmond RFC U11s to Broom Road for a joint training session. With over 40 players, it was going to be a busy morning! The touch rugby warm up was played with mixed teams from both clubs, building into 1 on 1 rucks and working on passing into space.
For the skills rotations, three areas were setup. The first area involved working on the defensive line, encouraging plenty of communication throughout. The object of this practice being to hold the line in groups of 4 or 5 players, hitting the pads at the same time, pushing up in attack and moving sideways cross the pitch in a line, together all the times. A tricky practise that players from both clubs managed to get to grips with.
The second drill was focussed on passing away from the breakdown, to put the ball into space. With straight lines of running, the players had to figure out how to pass the ball quickly through the hands into space and score the try based on 5 attackers against 3 defenders. This required the defenders to organise their defense and put in some solid tackles. The attackers had to look for space and pass the ball quickly and early, setting up the ruck and recycling the ball as needed! The third pitch involved a mixed game situation, focussing on passing, rucking and tackling.
The morning was rounded off with some more games, putting into practise the skills that had been worked on earlier. Hopefully, both teams will have learnt some valuable rugby skills and lessons from each other. A big thank you to Richmond RFC for joining us, a thoroughly enjoyable morning had by all.
