After focusing on rucking and defending for the last couple of training sessions, the HARFC U11s went back to some basics this week, to work on handling and passing quickly away from the breakdown. Warm up games were followed by some 'old school' passing grids, runnning corner to corner, popping and passing the ball direct to oustretched hands, all players trying their best not to drop the ball. Pass left, running straight was particularly challenging - but all did really well!
A number of passing drills were then developed. One was a game of 4 v 2, where the attacking team of four players had to keep the ball away from the defenders. Harder than it looked, and the U11s found themselves having to think about moving into space and passing; all at the same time! Another drill was 'fast hands', used to work on catching and passing quickly, whilst calling and watching for the ball at the same time. The third drill was working on passing, to get around obstructions. Working on quick, short passes, leading into a ruck. The ball was then quickly recycled and moved away from the breakdown to score in the corner.
The session was rounded off with some games, enourging the U11s to pass the ball at least two passes from the breakdown, looking for support in the offload at every opportunity. Having worked hard on passing and handling, it was fantastic to see some great passages of play, with hand to hand passes down the line, creating that space for some well made tries. A great mornings training, well done to all!
Next week sees the last training session of the year at Broom Road. Looking forward to resounding wrap up to this half of the season.
