Unfortunately, the current climate of uncertainty led to the cancellation of the Middlesex Festival this weekend for the two teams of U11s. However, so as to still have a run about, a training session at Broom Road was arranged instead.
Following a touch rugby warm up game, the U11s worked on some speed and agility skills, side stepping through the poles. They also worked on a drill to develop body positions at the ruck.
During the rucking practise, and so as to encourage the U11s to think and comminucate more as a team, the parent coaches implemented a self imposed 'silence'! Offering only encouragement and positivity, parent coaches were required to limit the "running commentary" of coaching suggestions. Noticably quiet at start, the U11s soon realised the need to tell each other where they were and what was happening next. I'm not sure who found this drill more difficult - the U11s or the parent coaches!
None-the-less, to round off the morning, the U11s dividing into three teams, holding our own mini-festival of sorts. Two teams played a match whilst the third team practised their drop kicks. Rotating around so that all teams had a go at kicking practise, each game was played to full U11s rules, with encouragement on passing into space, strong tackles and contesting at the rucks.
Well done to all U11s for playing this Sunday and for making the most of the morning. It was great to see so many faces having fun. The level of commitment from all was excellent, with one or two bumps received along the way. Looking forward to our next training session.
